Students, Teachers and Water Enthusiasts Take Action for World Water Monitoring Day

(San Diego, California, USA) (September 30, 2003)

What: Now that school is underway again, students and families are turning their attention to educational enrichment within the classroom and the community. Community service projects provide an opportunity to have an impact outside the hallways.

America’s Clean Water Foundation and the International Water Association, together with a host of global partners, are coordinating the first annual World Water Monitoring Day. Celebrated locally on October 17th, this event presents an important opportunity for students at all levels to become involved on a local, national and international scale. Citizen monitors around the world will get into the water to test at least four basic indicators of water quality. Data collected will be entered into a global database that stores all information collected during the monitoring period. Over a dozen educational institutions in the San Diego region and 10 schools in Mexico have already signed up to participate and the number is rapidly growing.

How: So HOW do teachers and students join local watershed groups in sampling water quality and reporting their findings as part of World Water Monitoring Day? It’s simple. Just pick a legally accessible water body near home or school, pull together a team and register the site locally at www.sdbaykeeper.org/programs/programs.htm or www.projectcleanwater.org. Helpful guidelines are offered at the websites. The local websites link to the international site: www.worldwatermonitoringday.org. There are many advantages to registering locally. The San Diego Citizens Watershed Monitoring Steering Committee (The Committee) provides a limited number of free test kits along with free water testing training, technical assistance, promotional items and a link to communicate messages with other water monitors around the globe.

Where: The Committee is hosting two events this year. The Ranch House at Los Peñasquitos Canyon, Peñasquitos Creek, San Diego County Parks and Recreation, Black Mountain Road, San Diego and Sweetwater Regional Park, Morrison Pond, San Diego County Parks and Recreation, Sweetwater Road, Bonita. The Director of Outdoor Education, George Stratman, and other local leaders will join students at the Peñasquitos Ranch at 11 a.m.

Why: "People throughout the world depend on clean, fresh water as their source of life. No matter who you are or where you live, clean, pure water is essential for drinking, hygiene, agriculture, commerce and recreation," stated Roberta (Robbi) Savage, President of America’s Clean Water Foundation.

"In creating World Water Monitoring Day, we wanted to provide an opportunity for people of all ages, backgrounds, creeds, faiths, cultures and ethnicity to come together as a global network of individuals who are willing to invest their time and energy in the pursuit of clean water, " said Ms. Savage.

According to Paul Reiter, Executive Director of the International Water Association, "What we are looking for are people who have an interest in tracking the quality of their community waters and then sharing that information with the world by connecting to www.worldwatermonitoringday.org." Test kits may be ordered at minimal costs through the World Water Monitoring Day website at www.worldwatermonitoringday.org. This site will also serve to collect data from each monitoring site.

For further information on the Clean Water Act and the Year of Clean Water, see www.filtersfast.com.

"There is the opportunity here for people to adopt a local waterway and sample and report on its quality year after year. By working together, we intend to create a global core of concerned and action oriented people who will become an important part of our efforts to educate the world’s citizens about the critical need for clean water," said Mr. Reiter.

The day’s efforts will be relatively easy and fun to carry out. Volunteers are asked to perform and submit data from four key tests: dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity/clarity and temperature. More experienced monitors may also complete more technical analyses such as macro invertebrate counts (bugs), nitrogen content, phosphorus and speed of the water flow.

We hope that this event will increase the public’s awareness of their role in protecting and preserving the quality of their local waters by inviting a wide range of citizens to work along side of more experienced monitors to assist with this global test on October 18th. Students can learn more about the watersheds in which they live, how watersheds work, and how protecting their waters can have beneficial impacts downstream. Teachers and students can also use their data to discuss impacts in their local watershed and compare their findings with others.
