Their participation is a follow-up from their involvement in a similar event that took place in the United States and Baja California, Mexico, last May, on Coastal Snapshot Water Day. The main purpose of World Water Monitoring Day is to increase the public’s awareness of their role in protecting and preserving the quality of our region’s and the world’s waters, by inviting a wide range of citizens and students to assist with this international test on October 17th. Data collected will help in drafting summary comparisons reflecting changes in water quality over the last thirty years. Teachers and students can also use this information to discuss impacts in their local watershed and compare their findings with their global partners. The day’s efforts will be relatively easy and fun to carry out under the supervision of experienced monitors. Participants will take and analyze water samples from six selected sites along the Baja coast, from Playas de Tijuana to San Miguel, near Ensenada. They will perform and submit data from four key tests: temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and turbidity/clarity. More sophisticated technical analyses such as nitrogen content, phosphorus, speed of the water flow, benthic macro invertebrates, and rapid trash assessment will be done by experts. Students, teachers and other participants are organized to foster everybody’s involvement and to optimize results. Teachers and students interested in joining this event can contact any of the participating institutions: Instituto México, CETYS Universidad, Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, Universidad Iberoamericana or Universidad Xochicalco. Other citizens can contact the Offices of The State or County Educational Systems in Tijuana. An Organizing Committee that includes representatives from all the participating institutions and organizations coordinates this effort locally. In San Diego it is coordinated by a Steering Committee (www.sdbaykeeper.org/programs/programs.htm) and worldwide by America’s Clean Water Foundation, in cooperation with several other environmental groups and governmental agencies around the world.
